People ask AI who to hire now. How AI tools read a chamber directory, what makes a member page readable, and how to check yours.

## In plain English

More people now ask an AI tool for a recommendation instead of scrolling search results. Google says its AI Overviews reach over 2.5 billion people a month. An AI tool can only recommend a business it can read. A chamber directory that gives each member a real page, with plain text and structured data, on your own website, is something AI can read. A directory that loads with JavaScript, or lives on a vendor's site, may not be. This guide explains what to check.

## How people find businesses now

Search is changing. Google says AI Overviews have over 2.5 billion monthly users, and its AI Mode passed 1 billion in its first year. People also ask chat assistants directly: "Who's a good plumber near me?" The answer is a short list, not ten blue links.

For a chamber, that's a chance. Your directory is a trusted list of real local businesses. If AI tools can read it, your members can show up in those answers.

## AI can only recommend what it can read

AI tools send crawlers to read web pages, much like search engines do. Some of them can't run JavaScript. A 2024 study of AI crawler traffic found that none of the major AI crawlers it measured ran JavaScript, apart from Google's and Apple's. If your directory only appears after JavaScript runs, many AI tools see an empty page.

Quick test: open a member's listing, right-click and choose "View page source." If you can't find the business name and description in that text, many AI crawlers can't either.

## What makes a directory page readable

- **A page per member.** One business, one address, with its name, what it does, where it is and its hours in plain text.
- **On your own domain.** The page builds your site, and it stays yours if you change vendors.
- **Structured data.** LocalBusiness markup (from schema.org) labels the name, address, phone and hours so machines don't have to guess. The memberOf property can say the business is a member of your chamber. Google says the markup must match what's visible on the page.
- **Text in the HTML.** The words should be there when the page loads, not added later by a script.
- **Crawlers allowed.** Check your robots.txt. Blocking a tool's search crawler keeps you out of its answers. For example, OpenAI says sites that block its search crawler won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers.
- **A plain-text copy (optional).** Some sites publish a markdown version of each page, and a proposal called llms.txt lists them for AI tools. Google says it needs no special files, so treat this as an extra for other tools, not a must.

## How to check your directory

- View the page source of three member listings. Is the business's name, description and address in the text?
- Look at the address bar. Is the directory on your domain, or on a vendor's?
- Paste a listing's address into Google's Rich Results Test. Does it find LocalBusiness data?
- Open yourdomain.org/robots.txt. Are any AI crawlers blocked that you'd want reading your directory?
- Ask an AI assistant for a business type in your town. Are your members named? Is your directory cited?

Write down what you find, with the date. Run the same checks in three months.

## Help members help themselves

A complete listing gives AI more to work with. Ask members to fill in their hours, a real description of what they do, the areas they serve and a few photos. A listing that just says a name and a phone number gives a machine nothing to recommend.

## How Hiveway handles this

Every member is a real page on your own domain, with LocalBusiness structured data, a memberOf link back to your chamber, and a markdown twin. The text is in the page when it loads. Tiers change what a page carries, never whether it's readable. Hiveway for Chambers is $299 a month.

Hiveway is in its founding season: the two of us are building it now with our first chamber, and taking applications from founding chambers and destinations. If that sounds like you, [apply here](https://hiveway.org/apply).

## Questions, answered plainly.

### Can AI tools read our chamber directory?

Check by viewing a listing's page source. If the business name and description are in the text, most tools can read it. If the directory loads with JavaScript, many AI crawlers see an empty page.

### Do we need special files for AI search?

Google says no: there are no extra requirements for its AI features beyond normal search basics. Some other tools read plain-text copies of pages, so a markdown version can help, but it's an extra.

### What is structured data?

Labels in the page's code that tell machines what each piece of text is: this is the business name, this is the address, these are the hours. For businesses, the common type is LocalBusiness from schema.org.

### Does it matter if our directory is on a vendor's website?

Your members' pages build someone else's site, and if you leave that vendor, the addresses change. On your own domain, the pages and their history stay yours.

### Should we block AI crawlers?

Blocking a tool's search crawler keeps your directory out of that tool's answers. Many sites allow search crawlers and block training crawlers. Each company documents its crawler names.
