Members who can't see what they get don't renew. What to measure for each member, and a simple monthly note that shows them.

## In plain English

Most members who leave don't leave because the chamber did nothing. They leave because they never saw what it did. In association research, lack of engagement and lack of value are the top two reasons members don't renew, and nearly half of association leaders say their biggest problem is explaining their value, not having it. The fix is simple: measure a few things for each member and send them a short note every month.

## Why this is a renewal problem

A 2024 survey of hundreds of membership associations found:

- **Lack of engagement** was the top reason members didn't renew (47%), and 64% for trade associations.
- **Lack of value** was second (32%).
- **Forgot to renew** was third (29%).
- 48% of leaders said the reason their value doesn't feel compelling is that it's hard to explain, not that it isn't there.

A member who gets a note every month showing what happened for them is engaged, sees the value and is reminded you exist. That covers all three.

## What to measure for each member

Pick things that are true, specific to that member, and easy to understand:

- **Directory page views:** how many people looked at their listing.
- **Clicks to their website:** how many people left your site to visit theirs.
- **Clicks to call or get directions,** if your directory has those buttons.
- **Events they came to,** and how many people were in the room.
- **Times you featured them:** a newsletter mention, a social post, a ribbon cutting.
- **Referrals or leads** you passed along.

Skip vanity numbers that aren't about them, like your total website traffic. A member wants to know what happened for their business.

## The monthly member note

Keep it short enough to read on a phone. A simple shape:

- One line of thanks, with their business name.
- Three or four numbers from last month, in plain words: "142 people looked at your listing. 31 clicked through to your website."
- One thing coming up they'd want to know about: an event, a sponsorship, a deadline.
- One easy ask: update your hours, add a photo, post a job.

If a number is low, say so and say how to raise it. A listing with photos and hours gets more clicks than a bare one. Honest notes build more trust than flattering ones.

## Make the numbers possible

- Give every member their own page with its own address, so you can count views for each one.
- Track outbound clicks on website, phone and directions buttons.
- Record event check-ins, not just ticket sales.
- Keep a simple log of when you featured each member.

If your current software can't count these per member, that's worth knowing before your next renewal season.

## How Hiveway handles this

Hiveway is designed to send every member an automatic monthly note: how many people saw their page, how many clicked through to their site, and the events they came to. Every member has a real page on your own domain, and every event uses check-in from a phone, so the numbers are there to count. Hiveway for Chambers is $299 a month.

Hiveway is in its founding season: the two of us are building it now with our first chamber, and taking applications from founding chambers and destinations. If that sounds like you, [apply here](https://hiveway.org/apply).

## Questions, answered plainly.

### Why do chamber members not renew?

In a 2024 survey of membership associations, the top reasons were lack of engagement (47%), lack of value (32%) and forgetting to renew (29%). Most of those come down to members not seeing what they get.

### What numbers should we share with members?

Numbers about their business: views of their directory page, clicks to their website, events they attended, and times you featured them. Leave out totals that aren't about them.

### How often should we send a member report?

Monthly works well. It's often enough that members remember you, and there's usually something new to show.

### What if a member's numbers are low?

Tell them, and tell them how to raise them: add photos, hours and a full description. An honest note with a fix builds more trust than a flattering one.
